Bhebhe shines at gospel concert

JOYOUS Celebration’s Mkhululi Bhebhe put up an electrifying performance at the Large City Hall in Bulawayo during the Sithi Uyingcwele Gospel Concert held on Saturday evening.Bhebhe performed in front of more than 700 gospel fans and was backed by 24-member Bulawayo gospel group Vocal-Extraordinaire (Vocal-Ex).

When Bhebhe took to the stage, fans moved nearer to the stage to get a closer look at the local superstar who has made a name for himself down South.

Clad in a navy blue blazer with three gold ribbons on each wrist, Bhebhe, who joined Joyous Celebration in 2010, began his set with the I beat medley.

The crowd was elated when Bhebhe performed his hit song Ichokwadi, which is one of his most popular songs. Ichokwadi is a song off the Joyous Celebration 16 DVD album where Bhebhe led the South African group in singing it.

Bhebhe, who is now based in South Africa, could not hide his excitement over the support he received in his home town.

“It was a magical experience performing with these talented young men and women. I’m overwhelmed by the response the people of Bulawayo showed me,” he said.

Before Bhebhe went on stage, a female member of Vocal-Ex, Chelsea, had thrilled fans with a praise song titled Hamuzofari here. So good was her   performance that fans requested an encore when she went off stage.

Idols 2009 East Africa winner and co-founder of Vocal Ex, Eric Moyo, was also outstanding at the concert with a performance of his hit track, Simudza Mawoko which thrilled the audience. Several local gospel groups including acapella groups Family Voices, Shalom and Salt and Light also put up polished performances.

During the concert, Vocal-Ex recorded a live DVD for their Sithi Uyingcwele album. The album is expected to be released later this year.

One of the organisers of the concert, Thembelani Mdlaziba – co-founder of Vocal-Ex, said he was humbled by the turn out of people at the concert.
