COWDRAY PARK-BRED Afro-Pop sensation Bhila, born Patriarch Manyabi, is beaming with excitement after securing two nominations at this year’s Bulawayo Arts Awards (BAAs), set for December 20 at the Zimbabwe International Exhibition Centre (ZIEC), Hall 3.
This marks Bhila’s second appearance at the BAAs, following his debut last year with a nomination for Outstanding Newcomer. This time, his rising influence has earned him recognition in the Outstanding Song of the Year and Outstanding Alternative Music categories.
His hit single Emaweni, featuring Gwanda’s Kay Kid Umfanomsotho, clinched him a spot in the Song of the Year race, where he will go head-to-head with Mxolisi Mr Bones (Bangihlangabeze Ngekhesi), Amathonga Amahle (Soft Life), Jay Cee (Ungayithi Vuu) and Black Diva (Thilo Lilo).

In the Outstanding Alternative Music category, Bhila is up against some of Bulawayo’s finest: Ma9Nine, Asante Mo, Matojeni Melo Maniacs, Abigail Mabuza, Bhekiwe and traditionalist, Dziba Lemvula.
Reacting to the recognition, Bhila said the nominations affirm his artistic growth and the increasing appreciation for his work.
“I have two songs, including Emaweni, that are performing well both online and on the radio. I also launched the Ubuntu Culture Night platform last year, which was a huge success, followed by my Bhila Live Concert, which was a full house. These efforts, I believe, contributed to the nominations,” he said.
Bhila, known for weaving themes of love, faith and life into his music, acknowledged the stiff competition in both categories but remains hopeful.
“Both categories are tough. Everyone I’m nominated with is doing exceptionally well and their work speaks for itself. I expect surprises, but I’m hopeful to walk away with at least one award — or even both,” he said.
The Emaweni hit-maker said his journey serves as a beacon of hope for young people striving to make it in the arts despite the challenges.
“This achievement is for every young person who believes in their dreams. Being nominated at the BAAs puts me in the spotlight, and I want to use this moment to inspire the next generation to keep pushing, no matter the odds,” he added.
