THE border town of Beitbridge will this year witness its first ever arts festival dubbed the Beitbridge International Festival of Arts to be held later this year. The festival, a multi disciplinary fiesta aims at bringing together some of the little known Beitbridge artistes so that they could interact established artistes from across the country.
The organisers of the show said the idea came up after realising that the border town had nothing much to offer in terms of arts.
“Beitbridge is a border town and probably one of the busiest towns in the country and we noticed that it had potential not only to grow the festival but business as well.
There are so many talented artistes in the town but we have not heard of them because they don’t even take their music to some of the radio stations because there is no reception,” said one of the organisers.
The festival to be held in October will feature all arts disciplines.
“The festival will run from 24-26 October and the majority of genres will be represented namely, music, dance, theatre and visual art.
The festival would be held under the theme “Big Art, Small Town”.
“We are trying to change the mindset that business or arts are only confined to Harare and Bulawayo.
We are taking the arts to the people and we will be conducting workshops in rural areas,” he said.
The organisers added that they were compiling a data base to scout for artistes and groups in the border town.
“We are officially launching the festival at the end of the month and that is when we will be calling for applicants who wish to participate at the festival,” said one of the organisers.
