I MUST applaud the effort by creatives and event organisers for producing amazing art works and events throughout the year. This in light of the rather unstable/ unfriendly economy. Outside of the international acts being brought into the country we are running an alternative arts programme dubbed Arts Extra. The six-day fiesta began on Thursday with two productions, Her Story from Harare and 3 Sum by local poets Tinashe, Lady T and Fungai.
Tonight sees the première of the Witch Hunters at Bulawayo Theatre. The Raisedon Baya-penned play is presented by talented arts academy Centre For Talent Development. It follows a 94-year-old accused of Witchcraft, all village misfortunes like disease, drought and shortages are blamed on her. Is she a witch or protector of the village? It’s a must watch.
Saturday is headlined by an indigenous languages poetry session and Comedy Night both at Devine Car wash.
Bulawayo Theatre will play host to Ukama, another piece from Harare.The play explores the issues of marriage and failure to conceive, family relations, urban and regional migration and other issues relating to the girl child. The play is written and directed by award winning South African Bongani Benedict Masango.
On the 30th Bulawayo bears witness to high riding piece ThalitaKoum (Someone Lied) written and directed by Desire Moyo and presented by Victory Siyanqoba. The play is one of the bravest pieces to ever come out of Bulawayo as it tackles the thorny Gukurahundi issue.
On 31 December we have a shut down party at 8th Avenue Street Mall. The party is powered by City of Bulawayo as part of the Christmas Festivities and Supported by Chicken Inn and Skyz Metro FM. The party will see top Djs Skaiva ,Nospa, Dj Liz, Noma That Girl, Keitho, Dj Eugy, Cue Movement, Black Salt, Sweeto,Crazy D and timeless Dj Mzoe take turns to entertain the party people. The show is dubbed Shut Down Street Party and will usher us into the new year with an amazing fireworks display at midnight.
I would not choose a better start to our arts calendar for 2019 than the one we have on 1 January. Globe trotting Iyasa will present a show dubbed 2 decades of Dance. The show is at Bulawayo Theatre and will see the 30-plus strong cast take us on a dance journey like no other. Iyasa recently just returned from a world tour and a historic double cast.
