Big Brother disappointing

It’s funny how time flies when you’re having so much fun. However, I was disappointed by Sunday’s Eviction Show on Big Brother All Stars. The show turned out to be a drab and for once I was forced to borrow from the strappers of the show and declare that Big Brother sucks! What an anti-climax it was after seeing three Barnmates — Sheila, Tatiana and Lerato — being whisked back into the house for what has become the fourth time in the season.

I thought big Brother would have known by now that these were losers who were rejected by Africa not once or twice but a record four times. Frankly speaking how on earth will Africa change their minds now when the Barnmates were shown the exit door four times? Honestly, the weekend’s Big Brother show was very uninspiring and lacked the spark. I was more than convinced that Big Brother was flogging a dead horse when it was all clear that the Barn twist was nothing but a waste of time.

When you look at how Yacob of Ethiopia and Ghana’s Sammy left the Barn you will realise that there was nothing for them as much as it was for the rest of the Barnmates. Between the three Barnmates Lerato, Sheila and Tatiana there is not much we can expect from them now because Africa has already decided who they want to see in the reality show. And it was the usual “I am going to be myself and nothing changes,” affair when IK, the host presenter asked the barnmates about their strategy.

To make matters worse, Big Brother did not do justice during the send-off show to the other Barnmates including Meryl of Namibia who recently got engaged to Mwisho of Tanzania in a show dubbed “desperate engagement for votes”. While recycling of housemates was probably this year’s main theme for Big Brother All Stars Season Five, at least Big Brother should have made the show as competitive as the previous seasons where those who were evicted from the house would go for good.

The only thing that was good about the Barn was that it exposed a lot of weaknesses in people. For instance, Yacob thought “it was the curse of the barn” and there was nothing more to it and he quit. Sammy, once he was ‘barnished” got sick and quit the game before he had fully recovered. And then viewers got to know more about Hannington’s violent tendencies in a dramatic fight with Lerato. His departure from the Barn was a sad chapter in the history of Big Brother Africa after he laid his hands on Lerato following an argument.

But Hannington was not entirely to blame after being pushed to the limits by Lerato’s impetuous and abusive behaviour. But it was not all gloom and doom in the barn as some barnmates kissed and made up. Lerato and Tatiana quickly come to mind and they came closer and embraced each other. However, as the drama continued to unfold in the barn, the housemates became suspicious that somehow there was a second house. And thanks to Uti for believing his instincts although it was difficult to prove to the other housemates.

The thing is housemates have been through it all and they know when and how Big Brother plays mind games. This is why it did not take long for Munya to discover that Tatiana and Sheila were hiding under the table much to the surprise of Big Brother himself. So the boys’ club of — Munya, Uti, Mwisho and Kaone ended at the weekend after three more housemates were added and we wonder what’s in store.

If the truth be told we are going to see the same Sheila gossiping, Tatiana doing her usual strip tease and Lerato in last ditch bid to revive the Midnight Crew. But we have been warned in the Bible that if you live by the sword you die by it and so housemates who plot the downfall of others will have none but themselves to blame.

The time to endear themselves to Africa is now and by reviving alliances. Big Brother All Stars is screened 24/7 on DStv’s channel 198 and whoever stays the 91 day course will become the winner and walk out the house with a whopping US$200 000.
