Big Chill sizzles

the venue for the must-attend gig.

A record crowd thronged the weekend’s Big Chill which coincided with Star FM’s first anniversary. Apparently Star FM is Zimbabwe’s first commercial radio station and it celebrated its first anniversary under the theme “Game Changers” and indeed the Big Chill changed the game of Harare’s entertainment landscape. If the crowd that turned up at Old Hararians was anything to go by, then Star FM is way ahead of the pack.

It was non-stop music with Star FM’s finest disc jockeys on rotation making sure revellers were not starved of quality music as well as guest appearances by Audius Mtawarira and Tatea Da MC of the “Vasikana Vakashata Vanoita kunge zvidhori” fame.

On the decks it was hectic as the DJs were on fire beginning with the duo of Nivek and Ash Styles throwing some serious hip-hop and R’n’B tracks. The youthful DJs, who operate under the tag line “Game recognise game” are regulars of Star FM’s “All-Star                                                  Party Show” hosted by Shingi Mokina aka the Moxinator.

Somehow things changed and went a gear up when Star FM’s Drive Time presenter Otis Fraser aka “The Flow” took to the turntables accompanied by his erstwhile buddy and turntablist Kimble Rogers of Zi-FM. The two rocked the turntables with The Flow selecting the hottest music while Kimble revved up the crowd on the microphone. Their act was akin to those that are witnessed in New York where DJs rock the party. As much as it was Star FM’s anniversary DJs from rival stations such as Themba Mkanda and Tondera Katsande graced the party.

DJ Chuckie and Vee also deserve mention for their effort. If you were not part of the crowd then you do not know what you missed. A VIP section for Star FM presenters and staff added colour to what was already a star-studded event. Fans who braved the chilly weather were given a show to remember with Audius making his presence felt through a polished act.

He exhibited a well choreographed act and like wine he is maturing with age. His R’n’B rhythm was popular with the ladies who screamed throughout his performance.
Fungai “Kush” Zvirawa of Khaya Defero said they started the Big Chill initially as a mezzanine event where people would come and hang out before going to the club or on their way home from work.

“It has now become the place to be on a month-end. It has a fantastic crowd, amazing set-up, great artistes and affordable drinks. We have tried to up the ante with every event and are happy that this event coincides with the first anniversary of Zimbabwe’s hottest and first commercial radio station,” she said.

Kudos should be given to Kush and her team for maintaining the high standards at the premier event  which was sponsored by Durex and Viceroy. The Big Chill has become the talk of the town and each month Star FM listeners look forward to the show.
