Big day for Macheso in Chitungwiza

Tafadzwa Zimoyo : Arts Reporter

Today is a big day for sungura maestro Alick Macheso as fans and fellow musicians join him in celebrating his 48th birthday at Tanza Centre in Chitungwiza. The venue is ideal, the decor has been put in place and caterers are waiting to make the day memorable. Fellow musicians have also tuned their guitars to strum in celebration of Macheso’s life and music.Suluman Chimbetu, Leonard Zhakata, Peter Moyo, Progress Chipfumo, Faheem Somanje and Freeman are some of the musicians set to celebrate with their sungura icon.

Also known as Baba Shero or Cheso Power, Macheso will without doubt make sure that his “music helicopter”, or Chikopokopo as the man himself likes to describe one of his styles, descends in Chitown with force and leave lasting impressions.

This is the town that stood by him when he made all the those long journeys to recording companies on foot trying his luck until where he is today, and in similar fashion of giving back to the community that raises you, Macheso has opted to celebrate with supporters in his former city.

This will also be a time for the fellow musicians to prove they are together in the game.

Macheso’s contemporaries, late music icons Tongai Moyo and Daiton Somanje, might be no more but they will be there in spirit when their sons Peter and Faheem take part at the celebrations.

Progress has backed Macheso for many years and he will be thanking his elder for advice in the industry.

Sulu and Zhakata have both taken part at most events featuring big musicians and they will lead the way for supporting acts.

“Joina City” hitmaker, Freeman will be the only Zimdancehall artiste on the line-up although surprise acts in this genre of the moment cannot be ruled out,.

Macheso celebrates his 48th birthday at a time he is making waves with his latest album “Tsoka Dzerwendo”
