BIKITA Rural District Council (RDC) is intensifying the modernisation initiative with the local authority investing over US$150 000 in procuring equipment for sustainable waste management.
The local authority received a boost from the devolution war chest and added internal revenue to procure a refuse compactor worth US$140 000.
According to Bikita RDC acting chief executive Engineer Arnold Mtuke, the local authority also purchased skip bins to improve garbage collection, particularly at Nyika Growth Point.
Infrastructure has also been upgraded at Nyika Growth Point, where, besides tarring of roads, ablution facilities now boast running water, while solar-powered traffic lights along the Nyika-Mutare main highway will reduce road traffic accidents.
Engineer Mtuke hailed President Mnangagwa’s administration for conceiving the devolution initiative and said his local authority was drawing inspiration from the President’s call to action to local authorities.
“We used devolution and internal funds to purchase the refuse compactor and skip bins,” he said.
“Bikita Rural District Council has taken a significant step toward environmental sustainability and urban modernisation through the procurement of critical waste management infrastructure valued at US$140 000.”
The Bikita RDC acting chief executive noted that the new “industrial grade” was going to alter the state of waste management in the Bikita district.
“This strategic investment marks a transformative milestone in the district’s development trajectory. Skip bins are now strategically placed at high-traffic areas, beginning with the bus terminus at Nyika Growth Point,” added Engineer Mtuke.
The local authority also expected residents and businesses in Bikita to purchase waste bins to improve waste disposal.
