ZIMBABWEAN striker, Bill Antonio played 21 minutes for KV Mechelen in the Belgian Pro League as he continues with the post-injury rehabilitation.
The 22-year-old former Dynamos hitman was introduced in the 69th minute as Mechelen cruised to a 5-0 lead before eventually winning 5-2 against Dender at the weekend.
A horrible injury sidelined Antonio for almost a whole year and he is happy with the progress he has been making.
The winger was injured in March 2024, suffering a cruciate ligament injury against Cercle Brugge and only returned on January 18, 2025 against Genk.
Antonio is not bothered by the amount of time he gets as his focus for now is regaining his best form.
“Whether it’s for one minute or for a whole match, I give everything on the field,” said Antonio.
“I’ve come a long way, it takes a while before you’re back at your best. It’s getting better every day and I feel good at the moment. Physically I feel ready, but mentally it is still with ups-and-downs. One moment you doubt yourself and other times you want to go too fast,”
Speaking ahead of last Friday’s match, Antonio downplayed the crucial assist provided in the previous match which ended in a 1-1 draw.
“For me, football is not just about statistics. Of course I’m satisfied with that assist, but a good tackle or interception is just as important. I play for the team and for the supporters. We played well against Standard, so the whole team deserves recognition.”
He is grateful for the support that he has been getting during what he deems a difficult time.
“I am very grateful to everyone who helped me during my injury. The medical staff and coaches helped me progress physically and my teammates and family provided mental support. It was a difficult year.
“The injury came just at a time when I was doing well. I had mixed feelings throughout that period. I was in the stands as a supporter and then I enjoy the performances of other guys, but at the same time it is also very frustrating. Fortunately, my teammates have always taken me into account and involved me in the group.” − Sports Reporter/ nieuwsblad
