Bill establishing new varsity gazetted

Government has gazetted the Pan-African Minerals University of Science and Technology Bill that is meant to establish a State university, which will train mineral professionals in beneficiation and value addition in line with the economic blueprint, Zim-Asset.

In terms of the Bill, the university will be established as a Nelson Mandela Institute of Excellence and is set to benefit the African continent at large.

“There is hereby established a State University to be known as the Pan-African Minerals University of Science and Technology.

“The university is established as a Nelson Mandela Institute of Excellence (NMI), dedicated to the teaching and training of very high calibre mineral professionals in mineral beneficiation and value addition for the African continent,” reads part of the Bill.

The university will provide for highly advanced post-graduate courses and research in mineral value addition, beneficiation and related minerals studies.

It will also serve to promote technological innovation and knowledge-based development in mineral science.

Another objective of the institution is to promote moral business acumen, entrepreneurship and technopreneurship of students. At the initial stages of the university, it will be offering five programme areas as follows:

GeoSciences, Mining Engineering, Extractive Metallurgy, Materials Science and Engineering and Minerals Business Studies.

Like any other State university, President Mugabe will be the chancellor.
