Bindura man up for attempting to kill Dinha

charges.

Khozanai Chijokwe (30) was not asked to plead when he appeared before magistrate Ruramai Chitumbura.

He was remanded in custody to July 5.
Prosecutor Mr Guni Guni said allegations against Chijokwe arose on June 13 at Aerodrome Bindura Centre after he unlawfully and intentionally attempted to kill Governor Dinha.

He said Chijokwe using his pick-up truck registration AAI 5712 drove and struck Gov Dinha who dived to save his life.

Gov Dinha sustained severe injuries on both his legs.
Mr Guni said Chijokwe, then tried to flee, but was apprehended by the public who handed him over to police.

Chijokwe is also facing alternative charges of reckless driving, speeding and failing to take a proper look-out.

The charges stem from an earlier incident where he tried to side swipe the governor at the 3-km-peg along the Bindura-Shamva Road.

Mr Guni said Chijokwe overtook Gov Dinha on a prohibited section towards the railway line almost causing an accident.

In an interview yesterday at his Bindura home, Gov Dinha said he was still in severe pain.
“My left leg was broken and according to the specialist who examined me this could be a permanent injury,’’ he said.

Gov Dinha said he suspected that his attack was politically motivated as he was on the forefront of campaigning for Zanu-PF in Mashonaland Central.

“It is a calculated attack that is aimed at intimidating me in campagning for my party. We will continue to preach a gospel of peace as President Mugabe stressed,” he said.
