Permanent Secretary in the Office of Vice President Kembo Mohadi, Dr Bensen Martins Dube has said innovation hubs have the potential to turn universities into financially independent institutions.
He lauded Bindura University of Science Education’s (BUSE) proactive approach to the current industrial revolution, which is in line with Education 5.0.
Dr Dube visited the learning institution’s innovation hub where a diverse range of beauty products and the masawu drink are being produced.
He then toured the optometry department that is under expansion, the garment production factory, and the mouthwash production unit.
The expansion of the optometry department aims to facilitate the production of optical lenses.
The fluoride-free mouthwash produced at the mouthwash unit, which is formulated with natural ingredients such as moringa and zumbani, aims to revolutionise dental care.
Dr Dude said innovation hubs can free universities from their dependence on the national fiscus.
“Universities can spearhead projects and meet their financial requirements. Universities must strive for autonomy from the national fiscus. Innovation hubs require robust support to kick-start their manufacturing initiatives,” he said.
