In an interview in Binga on Saturday, Binga chief executive officer, Mr Joshua Muzamba, said the bitumen was given by the Department of Roads.
He said while the focal point of the general assembly was Victoria Falls, the council and tourism players in the district were also preparing themselves in anticipation of an increase in business.
He said Binga was a halfway point between Victoria Falls and Kariba, adding that there was so much on offer in the district in terms of accommodation, attractions and culture.
“We are not going to be left behind as we want to also attract visitors next year. We are looking forward to the UNWTO general assembly. We are rehabilitating the road network, the hospital and we have also worked on the air strip so that planes can fly into Binga.
We are a prime destination sitting on the lake where there are house boats for short or long trips and we have the hot springs. We have a good number of wildlife and a significant population of safari ventures,” he said.
Mr Muzamba said the business community was also sprucing up their establishments.
“Boats have been spruced up and Simumu Lodge has been upgraded to ensure we carter for upmarket visitors,” he said.
Mr Muzamba said a local mining company, Sable Mining Venture, had also come on board and was helping the council to rehabilitate roads in the high density areas as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility.
