A 24-year-old man from Binga has been charged with murder for allegedly fatally stabbing a 32-year-old man after a confrontation regarding a romantic advance towards his juvenile niece.

The tragic incident occurred at Chitongo Business Centre in the Lusulu area of Binga District in Matabeleland North Province.
The accused, Khonzani Mumpande (24) appeared before Mr Victor Mpofu at the Binga Magistrates’ Court for the murder of Manager Mwinde.

He was charged under Section 47 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23 and was remanded in custody until 14 January 2025 and advised to apply to the High Court for bail.
The State case as presented by the prosecutor Mr Quiet Mpofu was that Mwinde (32) was at Chitongo Business Centre when he proposed love to Mumpande’s juvenile niece.

This, the court heard, did not go down well with Mumpande who confronted Mwinde and rebuked him against proposing to minors referring to his niece.
An altercation erupted resulting in a fistfight between Mumpande and Mwinde.

During the altercation, Mumpande is alleged to have drawn a knife from his pocket and stabbed Mwinde once in the left side of the chest.
The State told the court that the accused fled the scene, leaving the now deceased lying on the ground in a pool of blood.

The court heard that the stab wound was a deep cut that led to Mwinde’s death on the spot.
The prosecutor gave evidence linking Mumpande to the crime, highlighting that he was seen with a blood-stained knife shortly after the incident by a witness, Farai Mudimba.
Additionally, Mumpande’s brother, Thulani Munsaka, who was also at the scene and attempted to intervene positively identified him.
