The country’s traditional chiefs were also in attendance led by the President of the Chief’s Council, Chief Fortune Charumbira. Others included Chief Svosve, Chikwaka, Musarurwa and Ndaweni. Chief Charumbira urged ZTA to select a traditional beauty queen worthy of the country in future.
“International pageants look for a slim and slender model but what we would like to see is a true African beauty, one with curves,” he said.
Karikoga Kaseke, the ZTA chief executive, said the bira night was part of an initiative to appease the spirits.
“We have our tradition that we should regard dearly, a national event like the Zimbabwe International Carnival needs to have the blessing of the country’s spirit mediums,” he said.
The carnival has so far lived up to its billing besides the last-minute cancellation of the Samba Night which was scheduled for last night.
Fans were looking forward to experiencing street parades similar to the ones held in Seychelles, Mauritius and Brazil where the bikini-clad samba dancers perform. However, expectations remain high that the carnival will ignite national pride with an array of performances that include a street parade, street parties and gigs.
