WHAT would possess a man to stab a heifer twice in the stomach?
That is the burning question baffling villagers in Gwanda after a shocking case of animal cruelty left an entire community stunned and a farmer counting his losses.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), Nduduzo NARE (24) crept into a herd of cattle grazing at Denis Farm on 27 July and viciously attacked one of the cows.
In a statement, the NPAZ revealed:
“The offender stealthily mingled with the herd and stabbed the victim’s heifer twice on both sides of the stomach. He fled after realising that a witness was watching him.”
The witness later spotted Nare at Mopane Business Centre and alerted authorities, leading to his swift arrest. The heifer was valued at US$700.
The Gwanda Magistrates’ Court sentenced Nare to 36 months in prison, but 12 months were suspended for five years, and another six months were suspended on condition he pays US$700 to the owner of the heifer. The remaining 18 months were converted to 630 hours of community service.
The NPAZ condemned the act, calling for an end to senseless violence.
“We urge members of the public to desist from senseless acts of violent behaviour which usually lead to dire consequences. The law will not hesitate to punish offenders and protect victims in such cases like this one,” read the statement.
