1616: Happening now, President Mnangagwa is meeting Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Gao Shaochun for the signing ceremony of the certificate of donation for the Covid-19 vaccine doses received from China.
Ambassador Gao Shaochun says the delivery of vaccines is an exciting moment. He says the donation is significant in that Zimbabwe is among the first 14 countries in the world to receive the vaccine donation. Ambassador Shaochun says the gesture underlines the strength of cooperation between the two countries. He says China is the first country to make a commitment that its vaccine will be a global public good.

China has decided to donate 10 million doses of vaccines to Covax. The vaccines arriving today are China’s first major assistance program to Zimbabwe in the Chinese New Year. Ambassador Shaochun says this is a sign of a good year which lies ahead.
“I am confident the vaccines will consolidate Zimbabwe’s control over the 2nd wave of the Covid-19 vaccine.”- Ambassador Shaochun.

He says the donation would not have come at a better time for Zimbabwe. President Mnangagwa said the country has gone through a difficult time of collective grief. The pandemic has robbed us of loved ones on all fronts, President Mnangagwa says.
“My Government has not been spared. As we have laid to rest six illustrious sons of the nation and a daughter.”
“I accept this donation behalf of my country and I have to thank China for being a steadfast partner.”
This kind of support is evidence of our strong bilateral relations, says President Mnangagwa. President Mnangagwa thanks President Xi Jinping for the donation.
“Yet again, the sisterly China has demonstrated its solidarity by being the first to partner with us in the effort to vaccinate our people.”
