He said the elderly should not suffer because they are the custodians of Zimbabwe and efforts to help them should be supported.
“There should be a law that will provide a fund that will give support to the elderly. The nation was brought to us by you the elderly hence you should not suffer,” Governor Mathema said.
He acknowledged the problems faced by the senior citizens such as provision of houses, water and electricity saying there was an urgent need for the problems to be addressed.
“These houses are not yours, they belong to the city council. The issue of ownership should be looked into with urgency. It is not proper for you to suffer like this as you are the ones who built the nation,” he said.
“I will come back early next year to hold a meeting with you and you should be open to tell all the problems that you face and we map a way forward.”
He said the donor’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr Mike Manga approached him last month with one tonne of mealie-meal and he decided to distribute it to the elderly.
“The CEO paid me a courtesy call and told me he had one tonne of mealie-meal that I was to distribute at my own discretion. I decided to come here,” Governor Mathema said.
A representative of the donor, southern region manager Mr Aaron Chimuriwo said he was happy to be part of the occasion and the distribution was done in a transparent manner.
Mr Chimuriwo added that the company would continue to plough back to society.
