Bob ‘89 basketball tourney launched

Tournament at Mazowe High School.

Already there is the 21st February Movement 10km road race, which starts at President Mugabe’s house in Old Highfield, and finishes at Machipisa.
Chairman of the Bob 89 Basketball Tournament Organising Committee, Tendai Zhakata, said they will hold a fundraising dinner in the capital on Thursday evening where they are hoping to lure companies and individuals to support the basketball competition on March 22 and 23.

“We are going to hold the Bob 89 Basketball Tournament in Mashonaland Central Province. But before the tournament, we will hold a dinner dance on Thursday.

“Each of the top basketball playing school from each province has been invited to the competition to send the men and women’s sides.
“There is also a special invitation to 10 schools from the hosting province while we have also entered about eight established clubs for the same event,” said Zhakata. Zhakata, who runs Jammers basketball club, said the finer details of the Bob 89 Basketball Tournament will be worked out after the dinner dance but he remains hopeful that the inaugural event will be a success.

“The background to this basketball tournament has been that the First Family had been supportive to our basketball over the last six years when Robert (Junior) was involved in the Under-16 team right up to the Under-20s. So we felt that basketball could be an ideal outing and the matches should be played on a round-robin basis. We should be holding the finals on Sunday, March 23, and so far we are hoping to provide kits to all the schools while there should be a decent cash prize for the clubs,” said Zhakata.

Zhakata said the basketball tournament was meant to compliment the football tournament which was played over two legs between giants Dynamos and Highlanders this year.

Dynamos asserted their dominance in the football competition when they thumped Bosso 4-0 in the reverse fixture at Rufaro last month for a 6-1 aggregate victory.
