ALL is set for the official launch of the Bob90 Super Cup at a Harare hotel tonight ahead of the weekend semi-final clash between Highlanders and Harare City at Barbourfields Stadium.Winners of the Emagumeni tie will square off against holders Dynamos on February 23 in the capital.
“Everything is now in place for the official launch, we are ready to roll,” said the organising committee spokesperson and veteran broadcaster Charles Mabika.
The launch was initially set for last month but was postponed to today due to logistical reasons. The tournament, in its fourth year, is meant to celebrate President Mugabe’s birthday and is part of various festivities around the country.
In its inaugural year, the tournament was won by Caps United with new boys then FC Platinum lifting it in 2012 after beating coal miners Hwange.
Last season, traditional rivals Dynamos and Highlanders fought over a two-legged final, the first one played at Barbourfields Stadium that saw the Harare giants winning 2-1 through goals from skipper Tawanda Muparati and Patrick Khumbula while Beavan Chikaka scored for Bosso.
A week later the two giants clashed in the second leg in Harare and Bosso were pummeled into submission as DeMbare went on the rampage and drilled four goals without reply past Ariel Sibanda.
Dynamos got their goals from Khumbula, who scored a brace, Partson Jaure and an own goal from Simon Munawa. The second leg final saw the entry of Munyaradzi Diya into the Highlanders fold and the gangly former Dynamos and Zimbabwe Saints shot stopper has never looked back since then.
For their efforts DeMbare collected $110,000 while Bosso got $75,000. Highlanders players have already made public their intention to grab everything on offer this year and this being their first match following the postponement of the Cephas George Msipa Scholarship Fund Cup last weekend, a win for Bosso will set the ball rolling for their second silverware in two seasons.
Having brought in six new players and still on course to bring in two more, Highlanders will start as clear cut favourites to roll past the Bigboy Mawiwi-coached Harare City although the league second runners-up also have new faces, notably Dynamos reject Francisco Zvikumbawire and former Triangle striker Misheck Mburayi.
Meanwhile, the organisers have slotted in a main curtain raiser match between Southern Region legends and a Media Select.
Southern Region legends coach Gibson Homela has already announced his squad that has the likes of Ronald Sibanda, Dazy Kapenya, Douglas Mloyi, Peter Nkomo, Gift Lunga (Snr), Gift Lunga (Jnr), Nkosana Gumbo, Siza Khoza, Chipo Tsodzo, Johannes Tshuma, Bekithemba Ndlovu, Agent Sawu and Tirivaviri Sithole.
The Media Select will be made up of scribes from Chronicle, Sunday News, B-Metro, Umthunywa, Southern Eye, ZBC Montrose and StarFM.
