Body of late national hero Maj-Gen (Rtd) Dzihwema taken to Norton

THE body of national hero Major-General (Retired) Evaristo Dzihwema, who died in India last week while receiving medical treatment, was taken from Charles Gumbo Barracks in Harare to his farm in Norton earlier today.

He will be laid to rest at the National Heroes Acre on Monday, with President Mnangagwa expected to preside over the burial proceedings.

On Friday, Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, visited the Dzihwema family home in Harare to convey President Mnangagwa’s message conferring national hero status on the retired military officer.

Maj-Gen (Rtd) Dzihwema died on June 25.

He was 63.

His body was repatriated to Zimbabwe and arrived at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare on July 1.

A military funeral parade was held in his honour at Charles Gumbo Barracks on Friday.

In a statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage said: “The late national hero, Major General (Rtd) Evaristo Dzihwema, who passed away on 25 June 2026 will be laid to rest at the National Heroes Acre, on Monday 6 July 2026.

“The farm is at Plot No 7 Lyndhurst Farm in Norton, Mashonaland West Province.

“Friends, relatives and the entire Mashonaland West leadership will have the opportunity to pay their last respects to this illustrious Son of the Soil.”

The body of the late national hero is later expected to be taken to his rural homestead in Kamusoko Village, Tanda, where it will lie in state.

On Sunday (tomorrow), the body of Major-General (Rtd) Evaristo Dzihwema will be flown back to Harare for a church service at St Martin’s Anglican Church in Hatfield.

“Following the service, the body will be taken to his Zimre Park residence at number 5535 Platinum Road, where it will lie in state ahead of burial,” said the Ministry.

“Monday, the 6th of July 2026 is the burial day and gates at the National Shrine will be opened at 6am. Members of the public are invited to come out in their numbers to give a resounding and befitting send-off to give a resounding and befitting send-off to this great Son of the Soil.”
