PREPERATIONS for the inaugural bodybuilding contest — Mutare Classics — are underway, thanks to Dangamvura Amateur Bodybuilding Association (DABBA).
The revitalised DABBA, which has roped in Mutare mayor, Tatenda Nhamarare, is an affiliate of Manicaland Bodybuilding and Fitness Association (MBBFA). According to new DABBA chairperson, Innocent Mukahanana, the Mutare Classics is being organised as part of the sport’s mother body’s directive for affiliate provincial associations to organise several competitions before the main provincial contest. Mukahanana confirmed that they have set June 27 as the provisional date for the Mutare Classics.

“We have already started making preparations for the Mutare Classics as part of our efforts to follow what the mother body instructed us to do and that is to organise several competitions before the main provincial contest. Yes, the name of the association is DABBA, but we will also help in the formation of other small affiliate associations and running of bodybuilding contests in other areas here in Mutare such as Chikanga and Sakubva.

“Provisionally, we had set June 27 as the date for the Mutare Classics and it will be held at Dangamvura Beit Hall from 10am. It is also imperative to note that we have managed to introduce other new categories and it is against this background that we hope we will have a huge turnout even from first timers,” he said.

DABBA organising secretary, Shepherd ‘Beast’ Kuwana, also appealed to the local corporate community to chip in with any form of assistance towards the successful staging of Mutare Classics. “We sincerely plead with our local corporate community to chip in and help towards the successful staging of Mutare Classics. Bodybuilding commands a lot of support among people from different backgrounds and sponsors will definitely derive mileage in supporting bodybuilding.

“In the same breadth, we also want to urge bodybuilders to train hard and brace for more competitions during the course of the year. As DABBA, this is part of our efforts in developing bodybuilding as a sport as well as helping the provincial association in developing bodybuilding,” said Kuwana. Apart from the mainstream juniors, ladies and senior bodybuilding contests, Mutare Classics will also see participants competing in benchpress, weightlifting, deadlifting, powerlifting, strongman, male and female fitness figure competitions.
