Two Chitungwiza men who robbed a Bindura family of US$ 11 000, groceries and valuables at gunpoint four years ago were each sentenced to 20 years in jail on Monday.
The duo Iyeni Njanji (29) and Taurai Chikwata (44) pleaded guilty to robbery and two counts of attempted rape charges when they appeared before Bindura regional magistrate Mr Amos Mbobo.
The court heard that on August 20, 2020, at around 1 am, Njanji, Chikwata and their accomplices, only identified as Sam and Bruce, went to a house in Hay Road East in Bindura.
They forced open the lounge door and manhandled a 73-year-old man in the house, demanding cash.
They threatened to shoot him while assaulting him before tying his legs and hands with pieces of curtain cloth.
They entered another bedroom and force-marched a 21-year-old woman into a bathroom where they started fondling her and threatening to gang rape her.
She was saved after they discovered that she was on her menstrual cycle. After tying her hands and legs the gang started assaulting the woman.
They force-marched another 15-year-old girl into the kitchen and threatened to rape her. The girl pleaded with them, and they released her, citing that she was too young.
They ransacked the house and stole US$11 000 cash stashed in a small pillow. They stole several cell phones, groceries, school uniforms, and clothes and fled.
The duo was arrested after Sean Shava from New Mabvuku used one of the stolen cell phones and it was traced to him and he implicated them.
