A HARARE bogus cop, who robbed residents in and around the capital, finally ran out of luck and was arrested over the weekend.
Andrew Chinyan’anya was not asked to plead when he appeared before Harare magistrate, Stanford Mambanje.
He was remanded in custody pending bail application.
The court heard that on July 26, Chinyan’anya, and his three accomplices who are still at large, went to Melody Manjeru’s home in Chitungwiza, at around 6pm.
It is alleged they knocked at the gate and Manjeru attended to them.
Two members of the gang were dressed in police trench coats, while two others were wearing blue work suits with reflectors.
The court heard that Manjeru opened the gate for the gang, and two of them produced fake police identity cards.
They introduced themselves as officers from Harare Central Police Station.
One of them produced a firearm and pointed it at Manjeru, and told her to comply with their orders.
They told her they were searching for dangerous drugs and forced Manjeru, her four-year-old daughter and maid, Nyarai Mukarakate, to lie down on their stomachs, before tying their limbs with electric cables.
They allegedly ransacked the house and took US$4 500 and Z$500 from Manjeru’s pillow, as well as five cellphones.
Manjeru managed to untie herself and went to lodge a police report.
Zvikomborero Mupasa appeared for the State.
