A 51-year-old woman from Chitungwiza died after an alleged bogus doctor performed a surgical procedure on her at a house in Unit D, Seke, police have confirmed.
Douglas Mutore (40) has since been arrested in connection with the death of Magret Gwamura, who died during an alleged operation to remove a growth from her throat on 24 September 2026.
According to police, Mutore allegedly carried out the procedure using a surgical blade at the house.
Gwamura died during the operation, after which the suspect allegedly fled from the scene.
Police attended the scene and recovered surgical instruments, blood-stained bandages and used medication.
Investigations established that Mutore was not in possession of practising certificates at the time of his arrest.
In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police urged members of the public to exercise caution.
“The ZRP urges the public to verify the credentials of persons offering medical services and to seek treatment from registered medical practitioners and recognised health institutions,” read the statement.
Police said investigations into the matter are ongoing and Mutore is expected to appear in court soon.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the rising number of unlicensed individuals offering medical services in communities, often at a fraction of the cost charged by registered practitioners.
