A 42-year-old Chitungwiza woman allegedly masqueraded as a nurse stationed at Harare Central Hospital and swindled 78 people of US$3 100 after promising them jobs at the hospital. Martha Chitumba of Zengeza 4 reportedly went around the neighbourhood collecting money from people she claimed was for uniforms and shoes before pocketing it.
She used Hamunyari Matura of St Mary’s to collect the money and taking down names of all those who were interested.
Chitumba was not asked to plead to fraud charges when she appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo who remanded her in custody to January 27.
Matura was remanded out of custody.
Prosecutor Mr Learnmore Zuze told the court that sometime in February last year, the two went around St Mary’s where they misrepresented that they were looking for people in dire need of employment.
They collected money from people with each interested party paying US$33 which they said was for a uniform and a pair of shoes.
Matura, who also paid, collected US$3 100 and remitted it all to Chitumba but nothing materialised.
The matter was reported to the police leading to Chitumba’s arrest.
