Boks, NZ rivalry stretches 94yrs

LONDON. — South Africa’s rugby rivalry against New Zealand stretches back some 94 years, to August 13, 1921, when the two teams first clashed in Dunedin. The two power-houses of the game have met on an incredible 90 occasions, with the All Blacks holding a 52-35 advantage, with three matches drawn. Tomorrow’s Rugby World Cup semi-final at Twickenham will be the 91st — and one of the most important — in their storied history.

However, while New Zealand enjoy a comfortable advantage in the overall stakes, it’s South Africa who lead the World Cup battle. The Springboks and All Blacks have met three times previously in World Cup matches. In 1995 the Boks memorably won 15-12 after extra-time in the final in Johannesburg, thanks to a Joel Stransky drop goal.

In 1999 the Springboks once again emerged victorious, this time 22-18 in their third/fourth place playoff match at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. New Zealand’s lone World Cup success came in 2003 in the quarter-finals in Melbourne where they won 29-9. How will tomorrow’s fourth World Cup instalment end?

Time will tell . . .
