OVER 250 vulnerable members of the community in Chitungwiza are set to benefit from the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund.
Rosaria Mangoma, the Mayor, launched the Chitungwiza Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund last Saturday with several sponsors pledging to support this noble cause.
“The cause is not for the municipality alone and we are appealing for any form of assistance such that some of the vulnerable members of society can enjoy their Christmas like everybody else.
“We know that things are tough out there due to the El Nino-induced drought therefore a hand that gives is greater than the one that receives.
“I am therefore pleading to you all to give generously so that the less fortunate might enjoy the festive season with a smile on their faces,” she said.
She added:
“This event has come when vulnerable people are feeling the effects of the drought experienced during the 2023 – 2024 summer season.
“They need our support and we are looking to assist 250 individuals from 105 who benefitted last year from grocery hampers.
“We hope to donate to care organisations such as Bumhudzo, hospital wards and households that were affected by fire this year,” she said.
She said for transparency and accountability, the Social Welfare department will assist in identifying the needy and in the distribution of the donations.
The mayor thanked sponsors such as Lobels, Nyaradzo Funeral Services, Prophet Miracle Paul, local councillors and some individuals who made their pledges at the event.
“Some donations were made before today’s launch. Prophet Miracle Paul and Auntie Eggs are some who donated prior to the event, they brought several groceries,” she said.
