A FIRST year Midlands State University (MSU) student was found dead in his hostel on Saturday morning following a drinking spree with friends. Fellow students found Animal Science first year student, Daniel Malcolm Liang, dead in Magamba hostel at around 7AM. Liang and his friends allegedly mixed spirits and illicit drugs during a binge in Gweru.
Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko confirmed the tragic incident. He said police investigations were still underway. “I can confirm the death of an MSU student who died on Saturday at the institution’s main campus. Police are still investigating the matter to establish the cause of death,” he said.
The University Information and Public Relations Director Miriam Mawere said the cause of the student’s death was yet to be determined. “I can confirm that we had a misfortune on Saturday, September 12, 2015 when one of our students, Daniel Malcom Liang died. The now deceased was studying for a BSc (Hons) degree in Livestock and Wildlife Management and was in level 1.2,” said Mawere.
“Circumstances surrounding his death were still to be confirmed and his body has been taken to Bulawayo for an autopsy. “However, initial investigations revealed that the student was discovered unconscious in his room by his friends on Saturday morning. The friends then alerted Campus Health staff who then took him to the campus clinic and called a doctor,” said Mawere.
She said the doctor pronounced Liang dead upon examination. Fellow students told The Chronicle Liang and his friends went to Manhede Bar which is just a stone’s throw away from the main campus in the afternoon where they allegedly started taking unknown drugs.
They alleged that afterwards, the group started drinking Three Ships Whisky which they were mixing with opaque beer. “After the drinking spree with friends Liang passed out and his friends took him to the hostel where he died in his sleep,” said a student on condition of anonymity.
He said: “When we woke up on Saturday morning we discovered that he was not breathing and informed the authorities who then took him to the campus clinic where he was pronounced dead.”
