WHAT started as a simple beer-drinking night turned into a horror show when two Cowdray Park men brutally attacked two friends with machetes, all because they refused to share their booze.

Kelvin Siwela (25) and Prince Dube (23) are now behind bars after they were convicted of attempted murder. The two appeared before Bulawayo Magistrate Ms Dambudzo Malunga, who sentenced them to four years in prison for their violent outburst that shocked the community.

According to State Prosecutor Mr Owen Mugari, the savage assault happened on Valentine’s Day at around 10PM, near the Flyover in Cowdray Park.

The drama began when the duo confronted Mr Lancelot Moyo, who was enjoying a bottle of beer. Siwela and Dube allegedly demanded a sip, but when Moyo refused, they flew into a rage. Without warning, they pulled out machetes and began striking Moyo on the head, leaving him with deep, gaping cuts.

The rampage was relentless as it continued unabated.

At around 11pm, Talent Ngwenya, a friend of Moyo, arrived at the scene and tried to stop the attack. His attempt at peace was met with more violence. The pair turned on him, hacking him on the head with machetes and stabbing him twice in the back and once in the left arm. Ngwenya was left sprawled on the ground in a pool of blood, fighting for his life.

Siwela and Dube fled the scene, leaving chaos behind. Bystanders rushed Ngwenya to Mpilo Central Hospital, where he was admitted in serious condition.

The case was reported to the police in Cowdray Park, and a swift manhunt led to the arrest of the two attackers.

Justice has since taken its course, but the community remains shaken by the sheer brutality over nothing more than a bottle of beer.
