BORDER Strikers coach Never Malunga is aware that no team in Beitbridge has lasted beyond a single season in the top-flight league, but he is determined to rewrite the script despite his club’s poor showing to date.
Vavheneki’s former neighbours Underhill and Tripple B got demoted in the same seasons they were promoted and they have since collapsed.
But Malunga believes Border Strikers are different and will successfully avoid the chop at the end of the season.
The Beitbridge side posted a shock 2-1 victory over Dynamos two weeks ago to record only their third win of the season.
“We are fully aware of the Beitbridge curse. But, we are not that superstitious and we believe that we can rewrite the script.
“Border Strikers are a good team and I am very sure we will survive relegation,” said Malunga.
Vavheneki entertain Ngezi Platinum at Dulivhadzimu next weekend and Malunga has challenged his charges to gun for maximum points in that encounter.
“We have to win all our remaining home matches starting with the one against Ngezi Platinum at the weekend. If we win all our home games and strive for draws away I think we can survive the chop at the end of the day,” said Malunga.
Meanwhile, Mutare City gaffer Taku Shariwa is optimistic his resurgent team will play in the top-flight next season.
Shariwa who has been boosted by the return of goalkeeper Philip Nhete said his team has now extended his team’s training sessions’ time as he aims to instil the spirit of teamwork within the club.
Nhete has been at Tanzanian outfit Azam FC on a three-week trial stint and during his absence former CAPS United goalie Victor Twaliki was between the sticks.
