Boreholes for flood-hit Binga

Sunday Mail Reporter

The District Development Fund (DDF) has started drilling boreholes and resuscitating water infrastructure in Binga after recent floods that affected the area.

Most parts of the country are plagued by drought-induced water shortages.

DDF water supplies and maintenance director Mr Edwin Toriro told The Sunday Mail that the current works were meant to ensure that communities are not exposed to water-borne diseases.

“Binga District in Matabeleland North province was affected by floods during the recently received rains, which affected some primary water sources,” he said.

“An assessment of water infrastructure was conducted by the staff in the district and they came up with a list of water points affected, as well as remedial action to safeguard the communities against water-borne diseases.

“There is a need to rehabilitate the existing water points to ensure functionality and provision of safe water to the affected community.

“Flushing of the contaminated boreholes and re-drilling of collapsed ones to ensure people are safe from water-borne diseases (will also be done).”

About 26 boreholes that were affected by the floods would be restored.

The scope of the project also includes siting, drilling and installing 10 new boreholes.

The Civil Protection Department  noted that floods in Binga occurred at the confluence of Sibwambwa, Sikanda, Namakande and Manyenyengwa rivers.
