HIGHLANDERS and How Mine last week forged an alliance when they presented to the sponsors, through the Premier Soccer League, their proposal for the lowest entry charges for the Mbada Diamonds Cup final to be pegged at US$3. Since the start of the tournament, the sponsors, Mbada Diamonds had pegged the entry charges for the cheapest tickets at all the matches at US$1 since they are taking care of the team’s travelling, camping and bonuses.
However, both Highlanders and How Mine feel that the final of the premier knockout deserve a little more than a dollar for the fans to watch the big game.
On Friday last week, the clubs wrote to the PSL, who have since forwarded the request to Mbada Diamonds. Kenny Ndebele, the PSL chief executive, yesterday said they were still waiting for response from the sponsors.
“The league is now over and we are now preparing for the Mbada Diamonds Cup final on Saturday at Barbourfields.
“On the issue of the gate charges, we do not have a position yet but it’s a request from the clubs and we wrote to the sponsors.
“So we are waiting for Mbada Diamonds’ response,” said Ndebele.
However, Mbada Diamonds are unlikely to change their position as they have been flighting television adverts advising fans that the cheapest tickets will cost US$1.
While they are pressing to have the gate charges hiked, How Mine and Highlanders are busy sharpening their swords for the first Mbada Diamonds Cup final outside Harare.
Dynamos almost personalised the trophy when they won in 2011 by beating Motor Action at the National Sports Stadium and then overcoming Monomotapa last year at Rufaro.
This year, How Mine booted the defending champions out of the race in the quarter-finals before knocking out CAPS United in the semi-finals.
Highlanders, who missed the league championship race, beat Harare City in the semi-final at Mandava.
