Bosso out to roll back dismal slump in form

SUNDAY’S clash between Highlanders and Simba Bhora at Barbourfields Stadium arrives steeped in history, tension, and the unmistakable scent of unfinished business. Their last high-profile encounter in the Chibuku Super Cup quarter-final ended not in cheers or tears, but in chaos.

The match was abandoned amid ugly player protests and fan unrest, leaving a bitter aftertaste that still lingers in the minds of many. This time, however, both teams are hoping that football — not fury — will take centre stage.

Highlanders coach Kelvin Kaindu remains optimistic that lessons have been learned from last season’s controversies.

“I think we’ve seen an improvement in the way matches are being officiated compared to last year,” said Kaindu.

“PSL and Zifa are doing their best to ensure balance. We’ve seen referees being suspended in recent games, which shows the leadership is striving for fair officiating.”

Kaindu’s side heads into this fixture looking to reverse a worrying slump.

Without a win in their last three matches, Highlanders have slipped to ninth on the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League table, a daunting 11 points behind unbeaten leaders MWOS. A cocktail of goal droughts and defensive lapses has seen Bosso’s early-season momentum stall.

Still, there is hope. The return of key players from international duty is a major boost.

“I think it’s important to note that the four players who were on international duty will be a boost for the team,” Kaindu explained. “Defender Andrew Mbeba, midfielder Prince Ndlovu, and the promising Junior Chiwheta are all back from Cosafa duty, while Mason Mushore rejoins after playing in Morocco. Even veteran goalkeeper Ariel Sibanda is back in full training, though he’s still working towards full match fitness.”
Kaindu is cautiously optimistic that the reinforcements will breathe new life into the squad.

“We are expecting the players that went for national team assignments to be back on Thursday,” he said. “With Simba Bhora looming, the timing is just about right.”

Simba Bhora arrive in Bulawayo sitting second on the log, high on confidence, and fully aware of what’s at stake.

For head coach Joel “Dubai” Luphahla, the match carries a deeper, personal resonance. Once a beloved Highlanders player and part of their technical bench, Luphahla returns to Barbourfields with a point to prove.

His Simba Bhora side is no longer just punching above its weight — they’re title contenders.

“This is more than just another league fixture,” said Luphahla, reflecting on the challenge ahead. “It’s always difficult when you take a break and then have to come back. Psychologically, that could affect the players.”

Luphahla is still smarting from his team’s pre-break dip in form, especially the disappointing showing against Ngezi Platinum.

“I had a lot of worries about how the whole team played (against Ngezi Platinum), but we are hopeful the break has helped us work particularly on our mental strength,” he added.

The stakes are high. For Bosso, it’s about reclaiming dominance and silencing murmurs of a season unravelling.

For Simba Bhora, it’s a chance to cement their credentials and add emotional weight to a win in hostile territory.

Match Day 15 kicks off on Saturday, with GreenFuel hosting TelOne at GreenFuel Arena. CAPS United, buoyed by their away win over Manica Diamonds, return to Rufaro Stadium to face Chicken Inn. Ngezi Platinum Stars welcome Manica Diamonds to Baobab, while Yadah take on Herentals and FC Platinum square off with ZPC Kariba at Mandava. Bikita Minerals will host Dynamos at Gibbo in a fixture set to be broadcast live on ZTN Prime.

On Sunday, Scottland face Kwekwe United at Rufaro, while Triangle host log leaders MWOS at Gibbo, also live on ZTN Prime. But the spotlight will shine brightest on Barbourfields, where old wounds, new ambitions, and raw passion collide.
