HIGHLANDERS are in the process of giving their netball team a kiss of life amid revelations that player recruitment was under way.

a?We are in the process of resuscitating our netball team. Women who are free to join us can come and do so as recruitment has started. We have read about netball teams that are folding so we are looking forward to getting players from those clubs and join the provincial netball league,a? said Highlanders chief executive officer Ndumiso Gumede.

One of the clubas life members in the past funded the initiative from his pocket and he is the same person to come forward with assistance once more.

a?In the previous years we had a netball team that was greatly assisted by then chairman of the board Dumisani Sandi. He was very instrumental in coming out with that netball fields structure that we boast of near our Club House. I must thank Sandi and his wife, Mildred, because they have again agreed to assist the netball team,a? said Gumede.

The Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Netball League has in the past had formidable teams that include Ntutu Sparrows , ZRP Bulawayo, Railstars, , ZRP Ntabazinduna,A Free Stars, Blanket Mine , Lobengula QueensA and Zimpost among others as their affiliates

In February, netball clubs descended on Harare for the National Super League tournament to mark the beginning of the 2016 season at Stoddart Hall in Mbare.

Twenty-one clubs took part in the tournament following the promotion of four clubs into the national league after play-offs held at the beginning of the year.

Black Rhinos, Yadah, City of Harare and Nehanda made it into the Super League after shrugging off stiff competition from more than 28 clubs that took part in the play-offs. The tournament was also be used to initiate new clubs into the league. The Southern Region was represented by ZRP Bulawayo, Khami Prisons and ZPC Hwange among other representatives.

Meanwhile,A TshefunyeA Super Stars Netball Club from Tsholotsho is reportedly appealingA for fundsA that willA enable them to play in the more competitive Bulawayo Netball League. The team recently won a pre-season tournament involving eight teams a feat that brought the belief that they can do it at a higher league.

Sithandile Dube, the Tshefunye Super Stars coach, said they had run out of competition in the Tsholotsho Netball Association and they now want to taste competition in a more competitive league.

a?Funding is our biggest undoing but we would love to play in the Bulawayo League. But that will mean a lot of travelling for us. We are appealing to any corporate bodies to come and assist us either in cash or kind,a? said Dube.
