AS Highlanders Football Club’s centenary celebrations gather momentum, Bulawayo’s leading comedy outfit, Umahlekisa Comedy Club, is preparing to host what promises to be one of the most talked-about events on the Bosso@100 calendar, the Roast of Highlanders Football Club.
The unique event, which will blend humour, nostalgia and football culture, is set to take place at the
Bulawayo Theatre on 25 July where Bosso’s rich history, triumphs and heartbreaks will be grilled and celebrated in a light-hearted manner.
The roast forms part of the club’s year-long centenary festivities as Highlanders marks 100 years of existence. Highlanders, popularly known as Bosso, was founded in 1926 and is celebrating a century of football excellence this year.
Umahlekisa Comedy Club director Ntando Van Moyo said preparations for the event were progressing well with organisers putting together a formidable panel that understands the culture and history of the country’s oldest football institution.
While the full list of panelists is yet to be unveiled, Moyo revealed that the roast will feature die-hard Bosso loyalists with deep knowledge of the club’s journey.
“The panel will be announced soon but what I can confirm is that it’ll comprise Bosso loyalists who know the ins and outs of the club, the wins and losses, the glorious moments and the challenges that have shaped Highlanders over the years,” said Moyo.
He added that the roast is designed to celebrate the club’s legacy while allowing supporters to laugh at some of the memorable moments that have become part of Bosso culture.
“Roasts are about celebration. We’ll be celebrating a football giant that has given Zimbabwe countless memories over the past 100 years. There will be jokes, banter and storytelling but all of it will be done in honour of Bosso and its remarkable contribution to football and community development in Zimbabwe,” said Moyo.
Known for successfully hosting roasts of prominent personalities including Sandra Ndebele, Novuyo Seagirl and recently Bulawayo Mayor Councillor David Coltart, Umahlekisa has established itself as a pioneer of the comedy roast concept in Zimbabwe, using humour as a vehicle for celebration, reflection and public engagement.
