CHAMPIONS Scottland will carry one of the local football’s most intimidating records to Barbourfields on Sunday when they face Highlanders in a blockbuster Castle Lager Premier Soccer League Match-day 23 showdown.

Scottland enjoy a seven-point cushion over second-placed Hardrock while Highlanders are a distant seventh and 15 points behind.

But form and the log have rarely mattered in this fixture — it’s always a full house and always tightly contested.

Norman Mapeza’s men have gone nine consecutive league matches without conceding a goal, a remarkable defensive streak for goalkeeper Nelson CHadya and his rearguard.

That fine run has powered the Mabvuku outfit to the top of the log standings and firmly established them as favourites for a successful defence of their title.

Scottland have not only mastered the art of keeping opponents at bay but have also assembled one of the most experienced and potent squads in the domestic game with the capacity to score in every assignment.

Former Warriors captain Knowledge Musona, ex-national team star Khama Billiat, dependable defender Peter Muduhwa, and his fellow defensive partner Kevin Moyo have brought experience, leadership, and quality to a Scottland side that has looked increasingly difficult to stop as the season has progressed.

With Mapeza at the helm, Scottland have blended defensive discipline with attacking efficiency, turning consistency into their biggest weapon in the race for league honours.

But if there is one club capable of ending Scottland’s extraordinary defensive run, it is Bosso, who believe they can do it in front of their passionate supporters at Barbourfields.

Bosso will be chasing more than just three points.

Benjani Mwaruwari’s charges have the opportunity to become the first team to breach Scottland’s defence and also end their unbeaten streak. Scottland on their part, have also not let what appears a comfortable lead at the top to get into their heads.

Instead, they have used the mid-season transfer window to build more depth, amid reports that Mapeza also has one eye cast on assembling a squad strong enough to make an impact on their CAF Champions League debut.

While Highlanders have struggled for consistency, drawing a league-high 13 matches this season, they have often shown they can rise to the occasion against the country’s biggest teams, particularly at Emagumeni.

The fixture also comes on a day when Highlanders members are expected to hold an extraordinary general meeting to deliberate on the club’s financial affairs, adding another layer of significance to what is already one of the biggest fixtures of the weekend.

A Scottland win tightens their grip at the top and puts them another step closer to a dream title.

A Highlanders win halts the leaders’ march, ends their impressive defensive shut-out, and reminds everyone why Barbourfields is still one of Zimbabwe’s most intimidating venues.

That is, if Mwaruwari’s draw specialists can crack the Mabviravira iron curtain.
