Footie with brains!
It must have been a stressful four years for Gabriel Nyoni, a Highlanders FC speed merchant- shuttling between practice and classes, in between times, studying for in class tests as he juggled a football career and pursuingA an honours degree in Marketing with the National University of Science and Technology (Nust).
He is not the first to do it, Tauya Murehwa in the 90s had a football career with Dynamos and a medical degree with the University of Zimbabwe to worry about. But not many have gone that route.
Nyoni is set to graduate with a second upper class (2.1) degree class in a few months.
a?Nust results are out…A And Guess what, I passed with flying colours. I am very happy. So good Jesus, very good
Papa. Degree class 2.1,a? posted Nyoni on his Facebook Wall.
It was not an easy road as the footie star fell down the pecking order at Highlanders, in most cases failing to make it into the first team.
At least his options are wide open.
a?I am hoping to proceed to Mastersa level probably next year after my graduation in November,a? he told B Metro.
As the most educated footballer in Bosso coloursA he vowed to bounce back.
a?Football is also still on for me even though I am currently recuperating from an ankle injury,a? said Nyoni.
The biggest threats to his career are nagging injuries. He sat out the whole of last year because of a nagging ankle injury. This year he is also a forgotten hero because of an injury he picked at one of Bossoas training sessions.
