JUMBLE sale, auction or summer school can aptly describe a tournament featuring footballers from leagues in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Botswana and the Congo whose contracts ran out.
Through an initiative by FIFPro Division Africa- players like Ovidy Karuru recently offloaded by Kaizer Chiefs will take part in a four-nation tournament which will be held in South Africa from 14 to 16 July.
According to Footballers Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ) president Desmond Maringwa, the tournament will feature players from Zimbabwe, Footballers Union of Botswana (FUB), South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) and Union des Footballeurs du Congo (UFC).
a?A draw was conducted in Kinshasa, with players without contracts representing FUZ and FUB locking horns for a place in the finals. The other match will see South Africa (SAFPU) play Union des Footballeurs du Congo (UFC). The winners from the two matches will face each other in the finals,a? said Maringwa.
Losers will face off in a third place play-off.
Maringwa said the matches were expected to give an opportunity to out of contract players to showcase their skill and potential to club coaches, officials and scouts who will be in attendance to note and possibly consider signing these players.
