HIGHLANDERS are facing a key contract decision after confirming that vice captain Andrew Mbeba remains unsigned despite returning to full training, with negotiations slowed by a request for housing as part of his new package.
The 25-year-old defender has been training with the squad as preparations for the new season intensify, a sign that a renewal had appeared close. That expectation has now shifted after the club acknowledged that no agreement has been reached.
Chief executive Denzil Mnkandla said discussions with the player are still underway, but stressed that the club must remain financially disciplined.
“Andrew has not signed a new contract yet. He is training with the team while negotiations continue. There are areas that both parties are discussing and we are working towards finding common ground.
These discussions must balance the interests of the player and the sustainability of the club,” said Mnkandla.
Sources close to the negotiations say Mbeba is seeking a house as part of his new deal, a request that has become the main sticking point in the talks as he looks to secure his long-term future.
The situation leaves Bosso with a sensitive decision to make at a crucial stage of their pre season build up. Mbeba remains one of the club’s most reliable defenders and a key voice in the dressing room. Losing him at this stage would undermine leadership and defensive stability just as Highlanders aim for a stronger campaign.
The club has traditionally operated within tight financial limits, and meeting additional personal demands could set a precedent that alters its wage structure.
Mbeba continues to train with the squad, indicating that relations remain cordial, but with the new season fast approaching, pressure is mounting on both sides to reach an agreement that keeps one of Bosso’s leaders at the club without stretching its resources beyond what is sustainable.
