THE sudden U-turn by Botswana on the credibility of Zimbabwean elections demonstrates that the neighbouring country is biased and still hooked to Western countries, an official said. Botswana was the only country in Africa that disputed the credibility of Zimbabwe’s harmonised elections backing Mr Morgan Tsvangirai’s Western-sponsored MDC-T allegations that the polls were rigged.
Botswana Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation Minister Mr Phandu Skelemani on the sidelines of Sadc Troika meeting in Malawi on Friday claimed that his country had been misled by the MDC-T and some elements of civic society in Zimbabwe and abroad.
In an interview yesterday, Zanu-PF national spokesperson Cde Rugare Gumbo, said the revolutionary party was glad that Botswana has reversed its stance on Zimbabwe’s elections.
“First of all, we are glad that Botswana has turned around on their position on Zimbabwe elections and accepted the views of Zimbabweans. They have accepted that they were misled by the MDC-T and some non-governmental organisations in and outside the country.
We are also glad that their acceptance means that all African countries have accepted the election results and that will promote unity among all Sadc countries,” he said.
