LACK of fights has cost recuperating South Africa- based Bulawayo heavyweight pugilist Victor Elvis Moyo sponsorship.
The promising heavyweight boxer had earned himself sponsorship from Elev8. Moyo, one of Zimbabwe’s most promising boxers has been with the performance enhancing products company for a year and according to his contract, the Bulawayo born boxer was supposed to get five or more fights before his contract ends.
Since penning a deal with Brunel Laboratory owners of Elev8, the heavyweight pugilist has fought three times losing to Joseph Chingangu on points, beating Justice Silinga and a controversial draw against Osborne Machimane.
In an interview from his Johannesburg base yesterday, a distressed Moyo said he would soon be looking for a new sponsor.
Part of the deal with Elev8 saw the Bulawayo Bomber as Moyo is affectionately known getting a branded car, training at a good facility in Johannesburg and had some of his fights expenses paid for by the company.
“I have been advised that my sponsorship with Elev8 will not be renewed in August. The guys were not happy that I did not get five or more fights as stipulated in my contract. I am grateful to my sponsor Paul Jonker of Brunel Laboratory for their support through the Elev8,” said Moyo.
The boxer will continue training under Gert Strydom after the end of his sponsorship deal with Elev8.
Moyo who used to do sparring with former Pan African World Boxing Association heavyweight champion Thamsanqa Dube was dealt another blow after a Democratic Republic of Congo pugilist only identified as Platini turned down their 29 June bout.
Moyo said Platini’s refusal to fight him would give him time to recover from an ankle injury which he picked up a fortnight ago.
“At least now I am not under pressure at all. I have started doing light training though working on my upper body but I think in a week or so I would have fully recovered,” said Moyo.
