Boxers to trade leather in non-title matches in Zambia

South Africa-based Zimbabwean boxing trainer, Clyde Musonda, said Diana Makumbe, Tinashe Maziwana, Charles Manyuchi and Nicola Mutonhora could be fighting in Lusaka on October 20.
“I have organised for our boxers to go for the international fights in Lusaka next month against Zambian opponents.
“They will play in non-title fights before the main bout between Phiri and Forget,” said Musonda.
Musonda said Makumbe could trade leather with Rhoda Musukano of Zambia while Maziwana will fight Iban Kamota.
“Manyuchi has been matched against Jaison Mwisa and Mutonhora will box Lawrence Mwale,” said Musonda.
Musonda said he is now working on getting the four boxers into a training camp at his base in South Africa before they embark on the international bouts.
“I know that the boxers could be ill-prepared at the moment because they do not have access to proper training facilities like a boxing ring back home.
“So I am inviting them here to South Africa and will work with them before we leave for Zambia together,” said Musonda.
Musonda was in the corner in January this year when top Zimbabwean female boxer Monalisa Sibanda was pummelled by Zambia’s Esther Phiri in a world title fight.
Another local trainer, Bartholomew Dendere, said it was crucial for the four boxers to be adequately prepared if they are to make a mark in Zambia.
“A lot still needs to be done for boxing in Zimbabwe and it’s important to prepare the fighters well otherwise they will be punching bags and used to bolster other people’s records,” said Dendere.
