THE Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board is putting up policies that will safeguard the interests of local boxers, some of whom are earning less than $100 per bout.

While Zimbabwe keeps churning out international champions, the welfare of local boxers has been a cause for growing concern.

The issue was raised yesterday when the boxing board hosted new International Boxing Federation champion Beaven Sibanda at their offices in Harare.

ZNBWCB chief executive officer, Priscilla Kandungure, revealed that the board was working hand in glove with local promoters to ensure better remuneration for local pugilists.

Kadungure also saluted new IBF champion, Sibanda, who is now a three-star boxer and is sitting among the top 10 Straw weight boxers in the world.

Sibanda is also set to be rewarded by the Government for his exploits.

The 23-year-old rising star stopped Richard Garde in round five to win the IBF Minimum weight International title at the Emperor’s Palace in Johannesburg, South Africa.

“Your recent triumph and crowning as the International Boxing Federation champion has not only brought glory to yourself and your team but has also ignited a new spark of hope and inspiration across our nation,” said Kadungure.

“Your journey is a testament to unwavering dedication, relentless hard work, and the sheer power of an indomitable spirit.

“The ZNBWCB is incredibly proud to witness your achievements and we are committed to supporting you and all our talented athletes as you continue to elevate the standard of boxing in Zimbabwe.”

Sibanda fights in South Africa under Golden Glove promotions but has his roots in Beitbridge.

He is a product of the Charles Manyuchi Academy and also passed through the hands of revered trainer Ali “Otto” Phiri.

Following his victory against Garde, Sibanda has risen up the ladder on both the World Boxing Council and Boxrec ratings. Sibanda is now rated the eighth best boxer in the world, in his weight category, by the WBC.

He is number 10 in the world, according to respected boxing records keepers Boxrec. Sibanda is the first Zimbabwean to win the IBF belt.

He is also the latest international champion in a country that has produced several champions in recent years.
