NAMIBIAN boxing legend Harry Simon is expected in the country on Monday morning to add his signature among the game’s greats who will participate at the Zimbabwe World Classic Boxing tournament to be held at the HICC in August.
Renowned American promoter Edward Mendy, who is promoting the tournament together with local stable Box Africa, is already in the country to lay the groundwork.
Simon, who became the first ever Namibian world champion when he won the WBO middleweight title in 2002, will join an array of boxing stars, including sons of American boxing legends, who will take part at the event.
Floyd Mayweather’s younger brother, Justin Mayweather (6-0), and Seb Eubank, son of former world champion Chris Eubank, will also grace the event.
Justin Mayweather is managed by Mendy, who arrived in Zimbabwe on Wednesday from Dubai, where he promoted a tournament that featured rising Zimbabwean boxer Brendon “Boika” Denes.
Box Africa director Gilbert Munetsi said the extravaganza was part of efforts to promote sports tourism in Zimbabwe.
The event is expected to be watched online by millions of viewers across the globe given the cast of boxers that will be on show.
“We are expecting Harry Simon at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport on Monday at 8am.
“He is coming to append his signature as one of the boxers that will participate at the tournament.
“Harris will also be part of a roadshow that will see all the Zimbabwean champions parade their titles,” said Munetsi.
“We have received massive support from the corporate world and the Boxing Board. Corporates such as Edgars, Rainbow Tourism Group, Impala and Eat n Lick have so far come on board.
“I can also reveal that the promoter Mendy will travel to Victoria Falls next week in the company of boxing board secretary Lawrence Zimbudzana as part of promoting the event and marketing Zimbabwe,” he said.
