A TWO-YEAR-OLD Beatrice boy died during a steam inhalation exercise initiated by his mother in an attempt to cure him from some flu symptoms.

Dylan Chakaza was covered by a blanket and ordered to inhale steam from hot water mixed with Zumbani leaves.

Mashonaland East Police spokesperson, Inspector Simon Chazivachii, confirmed the tragedy. “The incident took place around 1700 hours at Fresney Farm in Beatrice on August 15.

“Georgina Chikaza, 30, who is the biological mother of the now deceased Dylan Chakaza, aged two, was steaming hot water mixed with Zumbani leaves, in a plastic dish, since her son was suffering from flu while they were both covered in a blanket.

“While they were getting out of the blanket, Dylan accidentally touched the plastic dish and the hot water spilled onto his right arm and neck and he was burnt.

“His mother rushed him to Beatrice Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival,” he said.

Insp Chazivachii said on the same day, at about 2100 hours, a report was made at ZRP Beatrice, who proceeded to the hospital to investigate.

The next day, Georgina appeared before Beatrice magistrate Sharon Nxongo.

Bart Malunga appeared for the State. She was remanded in custody until August 29.

“We urge the public to be cautious when they are dealing with water or water bodies no matter what quantity.

“Water can be dangerous, even in the cup or bucket, hot or cold.

“A life has been cut short during this process of kunatira,” he said.

The culture of steam inhalation, which is known as ‘kunatira,” is common throughout the country.

It was widely used during the Covid-19 pandemic.
