Boy, 5, drowns

A FIVE-year-old boy, son to a village head in Simbumbumbu area under Chief Mathema in Gwanda District drowned in an unprotected well on Monday, police said.Village head Junior Sibanda’s son identified as Kwandokuhle, drowned in an unprotected well on his way home from school.
He was in the company of his two friends when he fell into the well and drowned.

“The three were coming from school and when they arrived at an unprotected well, the now deceased, Kwandokuhle, was requested by his two friends to fetch some water using his water bottle. He slipped into the well where he drowned,” Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele said.

Upon realising that their friend had drowned, the two boys rushed to notify elders at home.
“The now deceased’s father upon receiving the  news advised other villagers and they rushed to the scene.  They managed to retrieve the body before making a report to the police,” said Insp Ndebele.

He said no foul play was suspected and as such a postmortem was waived by Gwanda magistrate Sheila Nazombe.
