A TRAGIC incident occurred in Muzirikazi Village, Buhera under Chief Nyashanhu after a 7-year-old boy, Sydney Chivandire, drowned in a well.
The accident happened on October 10 around 2 pm.
Acting Manicaland provincial spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident.
He said Sydney was guarding garden crops with his friend Marshall Munyavhe (9) when the tragedy struck.
“Chivandire attempted to cross a deep well using a log placed across it, but unfortunately he slipped and fell into the well. Marshall ran to inform Munyavhe Kurudzeni (45) who then retrieved the body. Police at Muzokomba were notified and attended the scene. The deceased’s body was taken to Birchenough Bridge Hospital for a post-mortem,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
In a similar nut unrelated incident on October 11 around 10 am, a 69-year-old man, Hapanamambo Panganai from Riverside Farm in Odzi was found floating in Odzi River.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said the deceased had left home on October 9 going to Mawone Village to collect tomatoes.
He was reportedly intoxicated at the time.
“Panganai, who was known for returning home late was drunk when he left. The following day his nephew Morris Taruvinga, searched for him but could not locate him. Villagers were alerted, and the next day, Tapiwanashe Chikukwa saw a body floating in the river. He informed his parents who then notified Taruvinga. Taruvinga later identified the body as that of his uncle,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka urged members of the public to excise caution around water bodies.
“We urge communities to take water safety seriously following these tragic drownings. Children must be kept away from open wells and rivers and adults should avoid crossing water bodies while intoxicated.”
