MORE than 70 aspiring footballers thronged Mutare Polytechnic Grounds over the weekend to attend trials for ZIFA Manicaland Division Two outfit, Boys DzaMdara FC, in a strong show of interest as the club intensifies preparations for the forthcoming season.
The impressive turnout underscored the growing appeal of the Mutare-based side, which is positioning itself to assemble a competitive and youthful squad capable of making a meaningful impact in the league.
The players, all aged below 28, came from different backgrounds across Mutare, Mutasa, Nyanga, Rusape and surrounding areas, united by a shared passion for the game and a desire to break into competitive football.
The turnout reflected growing interest in the club’s vision of building a strong, youthful squad capable of competing at a higher level.
The club’s executive committee, led by Secretary-General John Chitepo Kanyikwanaka, addressed the players who were selected to join what is shaping up to be an ambitious and youthful team.
“We are truly encouraged to see so many young players turning up in large numbers to be part of these trials. It shows that our youths are eager for opportunity, direction, and a platform to express their talent. While we compete in the Division Two League, our vision goes far beyond the standings or promotion ambitions. This initiative is about much more than soccer — it is about shaping lives and safeguarding our future,” said Kanyikwanaka.
Chipped in the club treasurer, Liberty Gumende, who is Top Striker hardware proprietor: “There is a growing and menacing scourge of drug and substance abuse threatening our communities and targeting young people at a vulnerable stage in their lives. As a club, we refuse to stand by and watch potential being destroyed by drugs. We believe sport — and soccer in particular — can serve as a powerful shield and a positive alternative. Through discipline, teamwork, mentorship and structured competition, we are giving young people purpose, belonging and hope.
“Our message is clear, choose the field over the streets, choose teamwork over toxic influences, choose health over harm. By embracing sport, these young athletes are, not only chasing their dreams, but also making a conscious decision to stay away from drugs and substance abuse. That choice can change the trajectory of their lives. Soccer is the entry point, but character development, responsibility and community impact are the ultimate goals,” said Gumede.
He added that joining Boys DzaMdara FC presents a valuable opportunity for young players to grow their careers and potentially attract attention beyond Zimbabwe’s borders.
“This is a great opportunity for you as young players. Being part of this team opens doors — not just locally, but even the possibility of being spotted abroad if you remain disciplined, focused and committed,” he added.
He emphasised that although the club will be competing in Division Two, its ambitions stretch far beyond merely participating in the league.
“We are not here to make up numbers. We are aiming to make a strong mark in the league this season. Our goal is to build a competitive, ambitious and youthful side that can challenge at the highest level possible,” he said.
He added that the club’s vision goes beyond football, stressing its commitment to empowering players both on and off the pitch.
“We want to empower you so that you can potentially earn a living from soccer. With hard work, discipline and unity, this sport can transform your lives. We will do our best as a club to provide guidance, exposure and the right environment for you to grow.”
He also congratulated those who successfully made it through the trials and encouraged them to seize the opportunity.
“Congratulations to all of you who have passed the trials. This is just the beginning. Better days are ahead if you stay focused, work hard and believe in yourselves. Let us build something special. The club is determined to use football as a positive force in the community, steering young people away from social ills and giving them a platform to pursue their dreams,” he said.
The executive said they are carrying out due diligence to avoid signing players affiliated with other clubs.
They added that a number of friendly matches and preparatory tournaments are being lined up to ensure that the team is ready to compete strongly in the league.
