THE battle for supremacy in Bulawayo’s pool circles reaches boiling point today when the semi-finals of the Bulawayo Province Pool Association (BPPA) Cup light up Queens Pool Club.
A big crowd of billiards enthusiasts is expected to fill the venue for what promises to be a thrilling day on the tables.
Queens Pool Academy, the defending champions from the BPPA Premier League, will square off with Renegades from the Reigate District League in what could be the tie of the afternoon.
The second semi-final pits Premier Pool Club of the BPPA Elite League against Dropmark, who hail from the Mzilikazi District League.
“It’s all systems go for the BPPA Cup semi-finals at Queens Sports Club today,” said BPPA publicity and marketing officer Osbornewells Dziko.
“We are expecting a large crowd and invite all local pool lovers to come and enjoy this annual tournament.”
Queens Pool Academy, packed with some of the most seasoned cue artists in the province, will be looking to defend their crown, while Renegades, who finished third last year, will be eager to cause an upset.
Meanwhile, the city’s pool scene got another boost on Friday with the official opening of Chill and Cue Pool Hall.
The launch event drew more than 70 players for a high stakes tournament that was eventually won by veteran cueist Stanley Ngwenya, while promising youngster Craig Nkala came second.
Ngwenya took home US$250 for his victory, with Nkala pocketing US$120. Both players have now booked their places in the national team, the Eagles, who are set to travel to South Africa for an upcoming international contest.
